At best, some people may believe those statements are funny and, at worst, other people may wholeheartedly agree with them. Political opponents, comedians, and some of the general public also denigrate individuals or groups based on physical or other attributes that are not related to their actions or political views. Dehumanization has been an early warning sign of genocide and purges in history. Jewish people were called a “bacillus.” In Rwanda, Tutsis were called “cockroaches.” Other genocides and purges are filled with similar rhetoric. President Trump is not a Nazi. Nazis were a regime that murdered six million Jews and millions from other groups they dehumanized. President Trump labels groups that don’t agree with him as an enemy. On Sept. 28, 2024, President Trump described “this mass migrant invasion of murderers, rapists, hoodlums, drug dealers, thugs, and vicious gang members.” President Trump’s post for Minnesotans to “fight back” against Somali immigrants could be interpreted as calling for violence against that group. President Trump’s labeling of Somali immigrants could be related to charges against a single 18-year-old Minnesota man whose parents are from Somalia the day before. None of these actions are appropriate for America’s President. Labels can be used to reduce another person’s humanity, and dehumanization in any form is absolutely evil.
I’m one person with a tiny voice and a blog. I enjoy political discourse and even lively debates. What I can’t tolerate is dehumanization or generalizations about groups of people.
